Twitter Account Deletion Guide
A straightforward walkthrough on how to permanently delete or deactivate your Twitter account, with illustrated steps.
Why Delete a Twitter Account?
Users may choose to close their Twitter account for a variety of reasons — privacy concerns, reducing social media use, or simply moving to other platforms. Whatever the motivation, the process is straightforward once you know where to look.
Note: Twitter's interface and settings menus may change over time. The steps below reflect the general process; exact button labels or menu placements may vary slightly depending on the version you see.
Steps to Delete Your Twitter Account
- Log in to your Twitter account at twitter.com using your username or email and password.
- Open Settings. Click your profile icon in the sidebar or top navigation, then select Settings and privacy from the dropdown menu.
- Navigate to account deactivation. Under the Your account section, look for Deactivate your account.
- Review the information. Twitter will explain what deactivation means — your profile, tweets, and likes will become unavailable during the deactivation period.
- Confirm deactivation. Click the deactivate button and re-enter your password when prompted to finalize the process.
Twitter provides a 30-day grace period after deactivation. If you log back in within those 30 days, your account will be reactivated and all data restored. After 30 days with no login, the account and its data are permanently removed.
Things to Consider Before Deleting
- Download your Twitter data archive from the settings menu if you want to keep a record of your tweets and media.
- Cancel any active Twitter subscriptions or advertising campaigns tied to the account.
- Revoke third-party app access connected through your Twitter login.
- Inform contacts who reach you primarily through Twitter DMs.
