What Is Two-Step Verification?
Two-step verification — sometimes called two-factor authentication — requires a second form of identification when you sign in. Even if someone obtains your password, they cannot access your account without also having your phone or authenticator app. Microsoft supports this feature across Hotmail and Outlook.com accounts.
How to Turn On Two-Step Verification
-
Sign in to your account
Go to login.live.com and sign in with your Hotmail or Outlook.com email address and password.
-
Open Security settings
Navigate to your Microsoft account security page. Look for Security basics or Advanced security options.
-
Enable two-step verification
Find the Two-step verification section and select Set up two-step verification. Follow the on-screen prompts.
-
Choose your verification method
You can receive codes via SMS text message, phone call, or through the Microsoft Authenticator app. Select the method that works best for you and complete the setup.
-
Save a recovery code
Microsoft will provide a recovery code. Store this in a safe place — it lets you regain access if you lose your phone or cannot receive codes.
How to Turn Off Two-Step Verification
-
Return to Security settings
Sign in at login.live.com and go back to your Advanced security options.
-
Disable the feature
Under the two-step verification section, select Turn off two-step verification. You may be asked to verify your identity with a code before the change takes effect.
-
Confirm the change
Once confirmed, your account will revert to using only a password for sign-in. Consider whether the reduced security is appropriate for your needs.
Managing Security Settings
Beyond two-step verification, your Microsoft account security page lets you review recent sign-in activity, update recovery email addresses and phone numbers, and manage app passwords for older devices that do not support two-step codes. Regularly reviewing these settings helps keep your account protected.
